Billies eliminated in second round of playoffs in 56-6 loss at Elkins

The Monticello Billies football season ended this past Friday night with a 56-6 loss on the road in the second round of the 4A State Football Championship Tournament to the number one seed from the  1-4A, the Elkins Elks on the road in Elkins. 

Monticello would win the opening coin toss but would defer to the second, giving Elkins the ball to begin the contest. 

Joseph Rojas would kick the ball away where Connor Hamm would take the kick at the Elkins 20, getting a big return down to the Monticello 19 yard line.

Elkins Quarterback, Dizzy Dean, would keep the ball on the first carry of the contest, advancing the ball to the Monticello 10.

The Billie Defense would push the Elks back on the next carry to the Monticello 13 with Elkins gaining one yard on the next play to the 12 to set up fourth down.

On fourth down, Dizzy Dean would connect with James Townsend for the 12-yard touchdown. 

Dawson Mallis added the extra point to give the Elks a 7-0 lead. 

Monticello would get a 14-yard return on the kickoff with Evan Bealer taking the ball at the Monticello five and returning the ball to the 19.

The Billies would only gain three yards on the possession, having to send out Jagger Hines to punt the ball away for no return to the Elkins 44.

Da’Shawn Chairs would gain a yard to the Elkins 45, and on the next carry, Chairs would break free for the 55-yard touchdown run.

Mallis added the extra point to extend the lead to 14-0 with 8:16 remaining in the quarter. 

Elkins would get one more touchdown in the quarter to extend the lead to 21-0 and would score their next touchdown with 11:16 remaining in the half to go up 28-0.

The scoring would keep coming as the Elks would follow with three more touchdowns to take a 49-0 lead at the half.

Returning from the half with the game under the sportsmanship rule with a running clock, both teams would play their underclassman for the remainder of the contest with Elkins scoring one more touchdown on a 14-yard interception return to make the score 56-0.

Monticello scored on the final play of the game on a two-yard run by Jackson Hines to set the final at 56-6.

With the loss Monticello finishes the season with a 8-4 overall record and a conference record of 6-2.
