City Hall renovation underway

According to Mayor Jason Akers, the first significant renovation of City Hall in 48 years is underway.

The renovation will repurpose and modernize the original Monticello Fire Department building, which was first built in 1932 and has sat empty and unused for 14 years.

The expansion will include a new and more accessible Water Department as well as Finance and Human Resources Departments. A large conference room will also be added to the existing City Administration Complex.

Additionally, the 2nd floor of the building will house Police Department Detectives, moving them out of the old city jail area located in the basement of the City complex and allowing that area to be repurposed for record storage.

“Our goal is to continue modernizing local government and maintain our historic buildings at the same time,” Mayor Akers said. “We don’t need to spend millions for a new facility to accommodate our growth when we can simply modernize the facilities we already have”.

The new facility will replace the existing water office, which will be repurposed into a waiting area or an overflow area for City Council meeting attendees.
