Dedication Ceremony

On Saturday, June 28, the City of Monticello held a dedication ceremony for the Reconciliation Bench which is located in front of City Hall.

The bench was paid for by funds donated by J. Chester and Freda S. Johnson of New York. Chester spent his youth in Monticello and wanted to fund a project in the community.

The bench tells the story of Mr. Fed Reeves and Deputy William Dollar. In 1868, both men were murdered because they didn’t let their ethnicity come between their friendship.

The bench represents many things. Most importantly that we as a community come together and be united as one, and to love your neighbors.
