Drew Central debuts newly turfed baseball and softball complex to start season

Lady Pirate and Pirate fans got a first look at the first major project of the Pirate Nation Foundation on Tuesday night with the opening softball and baseball games that were played on the newly turfed fields that was made possible with donations made to the foundation.

For the Lady Pirates, opening day would be a tough outing after Smackover got out to an 11-0 lead after two and a half innings of play.

The Lady Pirates would get on the board in the bottom of the third inning after a ground out by Zoe Johnson scored Bailey Chapman.

Smackover added three runs in top of the fourth with Drew Central scoring two in the bottom of the inning.

Ali Jo Cruce would triple to score Aalanah Jones with Kennedee Love grounding out to score Cruce to cut the lead to 14-3.

The Lady Pirates would score one more run in the contest in the bottom of the fifth after Mallory Jackson singled to score Amari Lucas.

The Lady Pirates travel to Camden to face Harmony Grove on Thursday, March 9, at 4:30 PM.

For the Pirates, the team would get enough runs in the bottom of the second inning to hold off the Smackover Buckaroos for a 7-3 opening day win.

In the inning, Jacob Jones would reach on an error that scored Tyler Grant and Jase Watt. Wyatt Wood would ground out to score Tyler Hornaday.

Will Watson singled to score Jacob Jones, Drew Burton singled to score Will Watson, and Jase Watt would reach on an error that scored Burton and Nate Cooper for a 7-0 lead.

Smackover would get runs in the top of the third and two runs in the top of the seventh to set up the final score of 7-3.

Jase Watt would pitch five innings, allowing one run on three hits with three walks while striking out 10. 

Burton would come in for relief to throw two innings allowing two runs on two hits, walking two and striking out five. 

The Pirates will travel to Camden with the Lady Pirates on Thursday for their second conference game of the season to face the Camden Harmony Grove Hornets for a 4:30 PM scheduled first pitch.
