The Drew County Quorum Court met at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12. Justice Joe Williams, Jr. led an invocation, and the Pledge Of Allegiance was recited by all in attendance. County Clerk Stephanie Chisom called the roll and found that all of the Justices of the Peace were present.
The court passed Ordinance No. 2024-30, which dealt with the levy of 2024 taxes. This ordinance reflected the changes that the City of Monticello passed last month. The city increased taxes to 3.5 mills and firemen’s pensions to .75 mills. No changes were made for the county.
The court also passed Ordinance No. 2024-31 which deals with stipends for current county employees. The stipend will be prorated for employees who have not been employed for the full year, and part-time employees will only receive $250 stipends. County Judge Jessie Griffin said that he didn’t think that elected officials should qualify for the stipend. Other elected officials argued that not only should they receive a stipend, but they should receive more than salaried employees due to the level of responsibility elected officials carry.
With no further business, the Quorum Court adjourned their regular meeting and entered into a budget planning meeting.
