Effie Brooks Civic Club shares May meeting minutes

The Effie Brooks Civic Club met on May 13, 2026, at 7 p.m. at Holmes Chapel Life Center with twenty-three members present.

The meeting was called to order by President Smith at 7:06 p.m.

The devotion included the song “This Little Club of Ours.” Club prayer and scripture were repeated in unison along with club theme song “Throw out the Lifeline.”

April minutes were read by our Secretary Ingram and approved with the addition of the ending balance.

Program Leader Sister Smith reviewed voting procedures and discussed the importance of voting. Club sisters were encouraged to participate in local elections and remain informed about candidates and issues affecting the community and the nation.

Our refreshments consisted of pinwheels, cookies, chips, tea and water. Our hostesses were Sis. Anderson, Sis. Marks and Sis. Bolden and Sis. Mitchell from the hospitality committee thanked the hostesses for a wonderful meal.

Program Committee Chairperson Sis. Anderson shared updates regarding the Club Anniversary and expressed excitement about the upcoming celebration.

Lifeline Committee Chairperson Sis. Block presented a word-search activity featuring words of affirmation to the membership.

Membership Committee Chairperson Sis. Brooks reported on membership activities and explained the new membership dues. The club welcomed our new member, Sis. Daniels, who introduced herself to the club.

Picnic Committee Chairperson Sis. Marks discussed plans for the annual picnic. We were reminded about the sign-up sheet that will be available next month, and members were encouraged to contact her with any questions.

Community Committee Chairperson Sis. Riley announced the following upcoming events:

Club Anniversary, The Word Church—May 17, 2026, at 3:00 p.m.

NAACP Juneteenth on the Square Event—June 14, 2026

Heros of Wilmar Event at the Wilmar Community Center—June 19, 2026 at 5:00 p.m.

Women Helping Women Back to School Event at City Park-—July 25, 2026, 10:00 a.m-2:00 p.m.

Little Miss Rosebud Committee Chairperson Sis. Block reported that there are currently 4 contestants participating in the Little Miss Rosebud Pageant that will be held on June 6, 2026, at the Hawkins Center at 4:00 p.m. Discussion centered on strengthening participation and supporting the contestants.

Scholarship Committee Chairperson Sis. Jamison announced the scholarship recipients for this year 2026 and there was one full scholarship and one book scholarship. The recipients will be recognized during the Club Anniversary Program. Scholarship funds will be awarded in September. The president emphasized the importance of academic achievements and staying focused on educational goals.

Constitution Committee report was the president discussed proposed revision to the club constitution, including updates to the probationary period for new members. The committee will meet to review recommendations and present revisions to the membership.

Sis. Lambert commended Sis. Anderson for consistently ensuring that the club minutes are published each month and encouraged club sisters to pick up a copy of the Monticellonian.

Sis. Smith read the financial report and provided the ending balance. 

President Smith gave closing remarks.
