“The Elaine Massacre Memorial Committee congratulates the City of Monticello on its recent dedication of a Racial Reconciliation Bench. The dedication was held at City Hall on the morning of June 28. The bench, which sits immediately in front of City Hall, stands as a 2/3rds of a ton commemoration and reminder of racial friendship that in Monticello between black and white citizens in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War. A friendship that resulted in martyrdom. In addition, the bench and it’s dedication recognize the demonstrable need for reconciliation of every kind in this country at this time. Citizens of Monticello, thank you for your courage, commitment, and leadership. May other local Arkansas governments follow your lead and take similar steps for racial reconciliation.”
The Elaine Massacre Memorial, in Helena, was dedicated September 29, 2019 to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the tragic events that happened at a small church just north of Elaine in 2019.
