Historic in Hot Springs: Lady Billies conquer Warren to claim class 4A state championship

It is a timeless sports adage that beating a good team four times in a single season is one of the toughest feats to accomplish. On Friday afternoon, the Monticello Lady Billies didn’t care about the odds. They only cared about history.

Playing at historic Jackie Robinson Field at Majestic Park—the legendary cradle of Major League Baseball spring training—the Lady Billies captured the 2026 Arkansas Class 4A State Softball Championship with a thrilling, hard-fought 7-4 victory over conference rivals, the Warren Lady Jacks.

Monticello had defeated Warren three times earlier in the season, but as the first pitch crossed the plate in Hot Springs, the slate was wiped clean. What followed was a championship battle for the ages, defined by explosive offense, clutch pitching, and a defense that refused to break.

After a tense, scoreless first inning that saw Monticello ace Addi Frazer escape a two-on, two-out jam with back-to-back strikeouts, the Lady Billies’ offense wasted no time making a statement in the bottom of the second.

Frazer, helping her own cause in spectacular fashion, stepped up as the frame’s leadoff hitter and launched a towering, deep home run over the centerfield wall. The solo shot sent the Monticello faithful into a frenzy and put the Lady Billies up 1-0. While Warren managed to stall a subsequent two-on rally, the momentum had firmly shifted to the home dugout.

True to their rivalry, Warren didn't go quietly. In the top of the third, the Lady Jacks manufactured a fierce response. A walk and a wild pitch set up an RBI single by Warren’s leadoff Haven Johnson  to tie the game. Moments later, Raeleigh Milton laced a clutch double into the right-central field gap, pushing the Lady Jacks ahead 2-1 and forcing Monticello to play from behind for the first time all day.

The deficit lasted all of five minutes.

In the bottom of the third, the Lady Billies unleashed a masterclass in situational hitting and patience, sending nine batters to the plate in a five-run explosion.

Libby Kingston ignited the spark with a single to left, followed immediately by a hit-by-pitch taken by Bliss Beckker. A wild pitch and a walk loaded the bases with no outs, bringing the dangerous Frazer back to the plate. Frazer hit a sharp grounder to third; Warren secured the force-out at the bag, but the tying run crossed the plate to make it 2-2.

The Billies kept the pressure on. Another walk re-loaded the bases before Joanie Jeffers took one for the team, absorbing a hit-by-pitch to drive in the go-ahead run. Mia Scogin followed with a sharp RBI single to center, extending the lead to 4-2. The carousel kept turning as Halle Ross delivered a sacrifice fly to center, and Grace Ferguson drove in another with a single that fell perfectly behind shortstop. When the dust finally settled on the third-inning marathon, Monticello held a commanding 6-2 lead.

Warren threatened to claw back in the top of the fourth, putting runners on first and second with nobody out. However, Frazer dug deep, inducing a pop-out and racking up consecutive strikeouts looking to freeze the runners and escape unscathed.

In the bottom of the frame, Monticello added what would prove to be a crucial insurance run. After Ashley Hales walloped a rocket off the centerfield wall for a long single, Frazer executed a situational groundout to move the runner to third. With two outs, Kiley Lane delivered in the clutch, lacing an RBI single to center to extend the Monticello lead to a comfortable 7-2.

The fifth and sixth innings turned into a defensive showcase. Despite a few defensive miscues and walks that allowed Warren to load the bases in the fifth, Frazer and her defense continuously found the escape hatch, preserving the five-run cushion heading into the final frame.

With three outs standing between Monticello and championship glory, Warren mounted one final, desperate rally in the top of the seventh.

Back-to-back doubles by Raeleigh Milton  and Charlee Wardlaw quickly cut the deficit to 7-3. An infield single put runners on the corners with nobody out, bringing the tying run to the on-deck circle.

Then came the play of the game. Natalie Hargraves launched a sinking liner into shallow centerfield. Monticello centerfielder Joanie Jeffers tracked it perfectly, making a spectacular, full-extension diving catch. While a run scored on the sacrifice fly to make it 7-4, the spectacular catch completely deflated Warren’s momentum and gave the Billies a crucial first out.

A full-count walk kept the pressure on, bringing the tying run to the plate. But Frazer, showing the poise of a champion, remained unfazed. She dialed up a massive strikeout for out number two.

With the count at 1-2 on Warren’s Brooklyne McVay, Frazer fired a masterpiece past the swinging bat for the final strikeout.

The ball hit the catcher's mitt, and the celebration was on. Players rushed the field, gloves flew into the air, and tears of joy flowed. For the fourth time this year, the Lady Billies bested their rivals—and this time, it came with a championship trophy.

The Monticello Lady Billies are officially the 2026 Arkansas Class 4A State Softball Champions!
