January City Council meeting swift and concise

In the first regularly scheduled Monticello City Council meeting, Mayor Jason Akers kept the meeting flowing with precision and directness.

All City Council members were present and minutes from the December 2022 City Council meeting and minutes from the special called January 2023 meeting were approved.

Under Unfinished Business, the item of filling the position of City Clerk was on the agenda. Akers stated that other parties were potentially interested in the position and considering this was an HR matter, more discussion would need to take place. The resolution to appoint was tabled for the February meeting.

In New Business, a Resolution to seek bids to replace the Bowser Street Pump Station was approved.

Resolutions providing for and adopting an operating budget for 2023, accepting the update and adjustment to the Sales and Use Tax Budget for 2022, providing for and adopting a budget for the Sales and Use Tax Budget for 2023, and accepting the update and adjustment to the operating budget for 2022 were all passed unanimously.

A resolution to accept the contract with the Monticello Economic Development Commission was accepted. It was noted that no other contracts were received for that service.

A Resolution to appoint Jerome Pace to the Parks Commission was accepted.

A Resolution appointing Daniel Courtney and Evan Patrick to the Planning Commission was passed.

Akers then commended Cindy Villarreal with the Barbara Abston Senior Citizen Center for helping save the Monticello tax payers approximately $5,000 annually by adjusting an outdated utility bill. 

Council Mark Tiner let the crowd know that the City manages a budget of $28 million and approximately 100 employees and he commended everyone involved in making this budget season go smoothly.
