City Crews worked Tuesday to remove the largest tree on the Square after its latest lightning strike. The strike occurred several months back and sent debris and bark flying some 50 yards from the tree and caused damage to electrical outlets and breaker boxes.
After the strike, Mayor Akers reached out to experts at UAM Forestry to see if the tree could recover and be saved. After months of monitoring, it became clear that the tree couldn’t be saved.
“We hate to see any of our old trees go, but over a hundred years ago someone planted this one,” Mayor Akers said. “Now it’s our generation’s turn to decide what will replace it”.
