Local art studio celebrates anniversary, announces scholarship opportunities

Moonraker Studios marked its first anniversary on Saturday, April 4, with festivities moving forward despite gloomy weather. The celebration gave attendees the chance to admire local art, enjoy refreshments and live music, and learn about all that the studio has offered since opening its doors—plus new opportunities coming in the year ahead.

Since taking over the space from Main Street Art, Moonraker has showcased the works of 20 local artists, seen increased art sales and venue rentals, introduced new classes, and even recently hosted a book signing. Studio owner Erika Barnett plans to continue hosting monthly events for all ages and shared that the studio is in the process of creating a website.

Barnett is asking the community to help find nominees for the studio’s second Creative Impact Award, honoring an artist who has made a significant local impact. Last year’s award was presented to Brazilian artist Mauricio Santos Carvalho. Nominations are due by October 17.

Barnett also introduced new scholarship opportunities. The Moonraker Summer Art Camp Scholarship Program, starting this year, will cover full tuition for children attending its Kids’ Summer Art Camp—“designed to ensure every young artist has access to creative opportunities, regardless of financial barriers.” The studio invites community members and organizations to participate as donors in this program. More information about camps can be found on the studio’s Facebook page.

The studio also plans to begin offering scholarships to local art students. 20 percent of proceeds from its Summer Art Camps will go to fund scholarships for incoming University of Arkansas at Monticello art students and gifts for graduating seniors completing their senior thesis.
