Monticello Mayor Jason Akers on debris removal

Monticello Mayor, Jason Akers, sent this message to constituents Saturday afternoon concerning debris removal:

Judge Griffin and I have communicated the following plan to local media outlets earlier today as well as posting on City of Monticello social media as it relates to debris removal.

  1. The Mayor and County Judge are encouraging those with the desire and capabilities to take yard debris to the County fairgrounds. Judge Griffin has graciously offered for city residents to take their yard/ storm debris there as well. There is a spot on the premises designated for this material.
  2. City workers are working to remove debris in town as well and taking loads of debris to the fairgrounds as quickly as possible.
  3. For citizens who have additional bagged household trash that is delayed in being picked up that will not fit in their can, I have placed two additional trash bins behind the police department that may be utilized by the public.
  4. Primary focus was initially on clearing roads and streets to make traffic passable. Crews are still working at this while continuing to remove debris and transport it to the fairgrounds.
  5. The city chipper, which was down for an extended period of time, has been repaired. Crews have been working there to remove the accumulated pre-storm debris. Once that debris is cleared and more can be taken, storm debris can be taken there as well. We will announce when that can occur.
  6. Anyone that needs city removal of debris may contact the water office 870-367-3415 and asked to be placed on the list to be picked up. Workers will diligently attempt to get to the debris as soon as possible.

Communicating this course of action to our citizens is crucial, Akers said.
