Monticello Billies boys tennis team wins State

Congratulations to the Monticello Billies boys tennis team who are the new 4A STATE CHAMPIONS!  The state tennis tournament was held in Clarksville on October 14 and 15 where the Billies won not only the boys doubles division, but also the overall Boys 4A State Championship Title. 

The doubles team of Luke Hairston and Jacob Romero won the boys doubles division defeating Clinton High School in two sets in the first round, Episcopal Collegiate high school in two sets in the quarter finals, Central Arkansas Christian high School in three sets in the semifinals, and defeating a second team from Episcopal Collegiate in the championship round. The doubles team of Parker Hill and Rohan Patel also advanced to the quarterfinal round, defeating Jonesboro Westside High School in two sets in the first round before falling to the number one seeded team from Central Arkansas Christian.

 The Billies girls tennis team also had a strong showing in the state tournament, with Maggie Fakouri advancing to the quarter finals of the girls singles tournament with a two set win over Arkadelphia High School.  In addition, the girls doubles team of Annsley Oltmann and Maria Gorostiaga Segura also advanced to the quarter finals of the girl’s doubles tournament with a two set win over Pocahontas High School.

 Before advancing to the state tournament, the Billies tennis team won the 8-4A District Championship on October 3 in both the boys and girls divisions.  The team of Hairston and Romero won in boys doubles, and the team of Hill and Patel placed second in boys doubles. Fakouri won the girls singles division, and the team of Oltmann and Gorostiaga Segura placed second in girls doubles.  The district tournament was held in Monticello where students played on our brand new high school tennis courts.
