Special to the Advance

Monticello Elementary School students and teachers are excited about the Book Vending Machine recently acquired for their campus. Students can earn a token from teachers and adult staff on campus by exhibiting “Billie Behavior.” Billie Behavior students practice good listening skills, paying attention to their teacher, following instructions and showing kindness toward classmates. “Each book choice requires only 1 token,” according to Mrs. Kelly Hudson, MES Librarian. Mrs. Hudson presented the idea, taken from a Facebook group, of purchasing the Book Vending Machine to Mrs. Cindy Hilburn, MES Principal. “Mrs. Hilburn was very open to the benefits of the Book Vending Machine for the students as a fun alternative to promote interest in literacy while increasing positive behavior,” according to Mrs. Hudson.

“I absolutely love the book vending machine! This is a great way to help build up our students and their family home libraries. The look of excitement when that coveted gold coin is placed in their hand is priceless! I try to find students that are making positive choices, doing their best, and who may not have books like this already at home to enjoy. It's wonderful how the whole school is involved and anyone can give any child a gold coin for a reward. Thank you, Mrs. Hudson and Mrs. Hilburn, for this amazing opportunity!" said Laura Clampit, kindergarten teacher.
