Parks Commission discusses lights for sports complex

Posted

The Monticello Parks and Recreation Commission me at 6 p.m. on Monday, February 3, at the Sadie T. Johnson Community Building. The roll was called and commissioners Marty Davis, Rick Donham, Amanda Killingsworth, Gay Pace, Jerome Pace, and Gerald Shepherd were present. The commission voted to approve the minutes from January's meeting.

Commissioner Jerome Pace brought up lighting the remaining fields at the sports complex. There are currently four fields that do not have lights. Once this project is completed, all the necessary construction will be completed at the complex.  Shepherd noted that there are three companies who are bidding on the project. Each company will submit prices for lighting each field individually, and they will also include the price for lighting the fields in pairs. One bank of lights would cover two fields. The latter option is not preferred. Shepherd said the bids should be in by the end of the week.

Donham asked if it would be possible to acquire aerial photos of all of the city's parks and facilities to have as reference material during discussions. Killingsworth said that she would reach out to a couple of different people to see what options were available.

Shepherd reported that bids for repairs to the complex had been received by the city. He added that his crews have completed two bridges that were needed on the disc golf course at Lake Monticello. He said that they would begin pouring a concrete slab for a bike wash station at Lakewood Trails by the end of the week.

Killingsworth asked Shepherd if there was an update on the Pickleball court project. He said there was no update, but noted that the weather has not been warm enough for the required period of time to allow paint and sealer to set on the court's surface. Shepherd also added that with baseball and softball fast approaching, his staff would be busy with field maintenance four days a week.

Donham asked that Shepherd get an estimated date so that the commission could talk to the citizens who donated money to fund the Pickleball courts.

With no further business, the Parks and Recreation Commission adjourned until next month's meeting.
