At the July 25 meeting of the Monticello Rotary Club, Rotarian Ashley Hogg presented the members present with an idea for a new service project. Hogg suggested that Rotary sponsor a feminine hygiene product drive. The idea stemmed from a conversation that Hogg had with Kerri Daniels, a director for Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home. During the conversation, it was discovered that some governmental officials who influence funding do not deem feminine hygiene products a “necessity”.
Hogg, along with several other ladies of the Rotary Club, thought this would be a great opportunity for the club to serve a segment of the city’s population that is often overlooked.
“We forget that the females in these homes have the same needs as we do. Feminine hygiene products are not cheap and not always accessible for everyone, so this opportunity allows us to help fellow females with needs we have no control over,” Rotarian Lore Ward said.
The Rotarians agreed that this was a worthy project to sponsor. Hogg and Lore Ward started a committee to organize the drive and hit the ground running.
“There are few things more important than teaching young women about support and empowerment,” Rotarian Amanda Killingsworth said. “They should not have to begin this life feeling like their body is a place that creates hardships they have no control over. We were fearfully and wonderfully made by a God who created us to not only create life but also to care for the lives around us.”
