Special to the Advance

Members of SEARK Reading Council nominated literacy leaders from Southeast Arkansas to be honored at this year’s Celebrate Literacy Spring meeting that was held April 25, at Bella Luna Restaurant. Latanza Atkins, Vice-President, presented awards to this year’s recipients. Kallee Laudell, a 7th grade Monticello Middle School student, placed second in the Arkansas Literacy Association state writing contest.

SEARK  Reading Council also honored and recognized two educators who were nominated by their peers and co-workers as Literacy Educator Leaders in Southeast Arkansas: Kari Newton, Principal at Jimmy Brown Elementary School in Star City and Melissa Grantham, high school English teacher at Dewitt High School. Both educators have gone above and beyond throughout this school year to promote literacy within their school and district.

Lastly,  Karen Robinson, K-12 Literacy Specialist at the Southeast Coop, was given the Educator in Literacy Award for her work throughout Southeast Arkansas in Literacy.

SEARK Reading Council is proud to present these recipients awards and honors for all of their hard work in helping the students of Southeast Arkansas become lifelong readers.  SEARK Reading Council meets three times per year and has the primary goal of getting books into the hands of children in Southeast Arkansas.
