The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's service organization. DAR members are dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism in communities across the nation.
The annual DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. This award recognizes and rewards high school seniors who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. These students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree.
Once a student is chosen as their school's DAR Good Citizen, the student is invited to participate in the scholarship portion of the program. This consists of a personal statement and an essay. Student participation in the scholarship portion of the program is optional. Scholarships are awarded to essay winers at the chapter, state, division and national levels!
For the 2026 contest, The Colonel David Love Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution asked Monticello High School, Drew Central High School, and Star City High School to choose three or more senior students worthy of being honored with the 2026 Good Citizen Award. Each student was asked to write an essay in response to the focus question: "What does it mean to be a patriot (good citizen) in 2026?”
The winning essays from the three schools are posted below:
Lynley Fletcher - Monticello High School
"Patriotism is not just a strong love for one's country, but rather actions taken to uphold the ideals their country stands for. In 2026, being a patriot means engaging in civic activities, advocating for justice, and adapting to changing circumstances.
After The Revolutionary War, the Founding Fathers envisioned a country run by the people instead of being controlled by a tyrant ruler. It is crucial as a good citizen to uphold that dream by participating in elections. Voting is an important part of being a patriot because it is the foundation of America's democracy. A common misconception in today's society is people think their voice does not matter, but one small vote can sway outcomes of elections with small margins. This can change the way our country is run for many years to come. In previous American history, voting is a right that has not always been given to every American. For example, people have faced great suppression, such as gerrymandering, due to gender limitations and racial injustices which caused unfair election results and greater oppression. This is why a patriot should take every opportunity to engage in civil activities. In a world where democratic participation is on the decline, it is important to take action and use your vote as a patriot.
Patriotism in 2026 also means advocating for justice by raising awareness for issues inthe country. For example, leaders like Susan B. Anthony in the Women's Rights movement and Martin Luther King Jr. in the Civil Rights movement, changed the course of American history by gaining suffrage for women and African Americans. Their dedication is the epitome of a true patriot that still applies today. Without their bravery, the majority of America's population would be deprived of the opportunity to use its voice. Today we see people of all ages starting movements against gender and race discrimination, and their actions are sparking greatconversations for change. There is no one too young or incapable of making a change. That is the American dream and a prime example of a good citizen: the freedom to voice your opinions and stand up for what you believe in.
Additionally, a good citizen should adapt to the changing circumstances of society. As important as it is to hold on to traditional values, it is equally important to accept new ideas in order for our country to flourish. For example, technology is making a change for the betterment of our country if used correctly. Many leaders and programs are already adopting its full potential. It is important to share these new ideas with others because new ideas lead to growth; therefore, allowing the country to flourish. This is why a true patriot should be open to seeing different perspectives and be open to learning new things. People change and countries can change too, so it is important to use new ideas for enhancement.
In conclusion, civic engagement, advocating for justice, and adapting to changing circumstances are essential to being a patriot in 2026. These values are not just defining traits of a good patriot, but also values that will shape the country for many years, inspiring generations to come. By following these core principles, a true patriot has the power to change the world."

"Being a good citizen in 2026 means more than simply following laws or participating in civic duties; it means choosing empathy, responsibility, and integrity in a world that is constantly changing. As society becomes more connected through technology and more divided by differing perspectives, the role of a good citizen has grown deeper and more intentional. Today, good citizenship is shown through how we treat others, how we serve our communities, and how we use our voices to make positive change.
In 2026, a good citizen understands the importance of respect and compassion. With social media and digital platforms shaping opinions and spreading information at unprecedented speeds, it is easy for negativity and misinformation to take hold. A responsible citizen takes the time to listen, think critically, and respond with kindness rather than hostility. Being respectful of different backgrounds. beliefs, and experiences helps create a society rooted in understanding rather than division.
Service is another key aspect of good citizenship. Whether through volunteering. supporting local organizations, or helping those in need, giving back strengthens communities and reminds us that progress is a shared effort. Acts of service no matter how small demonstrate accountability and care for others. In a world that often prioritizes individual success, choosing to serve reflects a commitment to the greater good.
Finally, being a good citizen in 2026 means taking responsibility for the future. This includes staying informed, advocating for fairness, and acting with integrity both online and offline. It also means being willing to lead by example, especially for younger generations. Citizenship is not passive; it is an ongoing commitment to growth, honesty, and positive influence.
Ultimately, a good citizen in 2026 is someone who strives to make their community stronger through empathy, service, and responsibility. By choosing to act with purpose and compassion, individuals can help shape a society that values unity. respect, and hope for the future."
Sincerely,
Ryli Birch

"'Please stand for the national anthem.' As the crowd stands up. I begin to wonder, what does it mean to be a patriot?
"O say can you see..."
To be a patriot especially in this day and age means more than waving a flag or posting opinions online. It means constantly participating in our communities, protecting democratic values, and looking to leave your community and ultimately, your country better than you found it.
First, contributing to your community. Being a patriot today means actively participating in your community rather than standing on the sidelines.
Patriotism is not passive nor easy, there is no "I'm going to do it later." Instead it is all shown through actions like volunteering at food pantries, mentoring younger students, supporting small businesses, and stepping up when there is a problem. Because a good citizen understands that real change often begins at the local level.
Secondly, patriotism requires informed engagement. Thanks to the Al bubble, we live in a world where information travels faster than we can handle, and misinformation can travel even faster. A good citizen takes responsibility for thinking critically, researching credible sources, looking out for what sources are more biased than others, and listening to perspectives beyond their own. Thanks to the principles outlined in the constitution, we (the citizens) are able to use our freedom of speech and our right to vote, but these powerful tools require citizens who are well informed in order to use them wisely, because patriotism is not blind loyalty to any political party or personality. Instead it is loyalty to the ideals of liberty, justice, equality, and freedom for all."
Congratulations to these students!
