Work on Pollinator Garden to continue

A Parks and Recreation meeting was held on February 6, 2023, at the Sadie Johnson building to discuss the pollinator garden project along with other issues.

A pollinator garden is a type of garden designed with the intent of growing plants that specifically produce nectar and pollen to attract pollinating insects.

The planning for this project began in 2018 after being approved by former Mayor of Monticello, Paige Chase, and planting began in 2020.

The location of the garden was to be placed at Jordan Park, the Sports Complex, and Lake Monticello. The goal of this project, as stated by the gardener who spoke at the meeting, was for the gardens to be used as an opportunity for both education and tourism. It was also stated by the gardener that it is estimated to take three to five years for these plants to produce nectar and pollen. Funding has come from outside donations from private individuals and businesses, and grants. Areas were flagged for planting for the project, but the flags were removed and part of the area was mowed over by mistake, including some smaller trees, flowering bushes, and blueberry shrubs.

The work is scheduled to continue as planned.
