Wreaths Across America event Saturday

Posted

The annual Wreaths Across America event will be this Saturday, December 13 at 10 a.m. at Oakland Cemetery.  Col. David Love Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution is the local sponsor at Oakland Cemetery.  This year, DAR has identified over 650 veterans buried at Oakland Cemetery and each veteran's gravesite will have a wreath placed by volunteers.  Local sponsors as well as family members paid for wreaths and volunteers will say the veteran's name and a thank you in a respectful manner at the ceremony Saturday.

A short ceremony with guests Judge Griffin and Mayor Akers will precede the laying of wreaths.  Volunteers and DAR members will be stationed at the different cemetery sections to assist with instructions and questions you may have.    If you would like to volunteer at this year's event to place wreaths come to the cemetery at 10 a.m. and look for the tent near the center of the cemetery.

Wreaths Across America is a separate event from Veteran's Day and other events that celebrate veterans.  The purpose is to remember those who fought for our freedom and security as a nation, honor the sacrifices of the men and women who served, and teach future generations of Americans that freedom comes with a cost not everyone is willing or capable of paying.
