Arkansas Tech holds off Weevils 87-81 in first conference game

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils began their 2023-24 Great American Conference season on Thursday, November 30, hosting the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys at Steelman Fieldhouse.

Issac Jackson would score the first points of the contest for the Weevils on a jumper to give UAM a 2-0 lead. 

Tech took the lead for the final time in the half on a three pointer by BJ Johnson with 17:36 on the clock to give Tech a 7-4 lead.

The Wonder Boys would lead throughout the half, with the biggest lead of the half being 11 points on two different occasions in the half.

UAM cut the lead to six points with 33 seconds remaining on a three pointer by Zane Nelson to cut the Wonder Boy lead to 38-32 heading into the locker room at the break.

The Wonder Boys would begin the second half by increasing the lead to 10 points on a free throw by Taelon Peter at the 18:18 mark for a 42-32 lead.

With 13:45 remaining in the half, Arkansas Tech would increase their lead to 12 points on a three pointer by Kade Shaffer.

Issac Jackson cut the lead to five points, 58-53, with 9:01 remaining in the contest but the Wonder Boys would increase the lead back to 11 points with 2:53 remaining. 

Zane Nelson cut the lead to eight points on a three pointer.

With 1:30 remaining Nelson connected on a three to cut the lead to six points, 76-70.

AK Hazely would cut the Tech lead to four points, 78-74, with 54 seconds remaining in the contest.

Tech increased the lead to five, but Jackson would cut the lead to two points, 79-77, on a three with 37 seconds remaining. 

UAM would get within one point on a pair of free throws by Nelson, but Tech would go on to take the contest by six 87-81.

Nelson would score a season high 36 points in the loss with Jackson adding 23. 

Cole Anderson and Josh Denton scored six, AK Hazely and Mario Fantina with three, and Zae Wiggins and Timur Krupalija with two points. 

UAM would lose their second conference contest at Henderson State on Saturday, December 1,  by the score of 90-59.
