Billies improve to 5-5 in conference play, defeat Crossett, Hamburg

The Monticello Billies would halt a four game losing streak after falling in three consecutive road games to Watson Chapel on the road 72-31, Stuttgart 53-45, and Warren 63-57, followed by a home loss to Mills University Studies 70-46.

Monticello would travel to Star City to defeat the Bulldogs for the second time this season 54-43.

Returning home to face the Crossett Eagles on Wednesday, January 30, in their fourth contest in six days, the Billies would fall behind in the first quarter with Crossett outscoring Monticello 17-7 in the quarter.

Crossett would score one point in the second quarter with Monticello taking the quarter 6-1 with the Eagles leading 18-13 at the half.

Monticello made up the five point difference in the third quarter with the Billies outscoring Crossett 12-7 in the third to tie the contest at 25 heading into the fourth quarter. 

Another close quarter in the fourth with the Billies taking a three point victory after outscoring the Eagles 14-11 in the fourth for a 39-36 victory. 

Quay Rhodes would lead the way with 11 points followed by Peyton Strickland with nine. 

Tejon Tensley added eight, Rohan Patel with five, Jax Rawls with four, and Kory Harrel with two.

Returning on Friday to host Hamburg, the Lions would get on the board first after controlling the opening tip.

The Billies would take an eight point lead in the first quarter behind Peyton Strickland’s five points, 13-5.

Monticello would take a 27-11 point lead at the half after outscoring Hamburg 14-6.

The third quarter saw both teams scoring 11 points with the Billies holding a 39-22 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Monticello would outscore Hamburg 12-10 in the fourth to take their third consecutive victory 51-32.

Quay Rhodes led the way with 16 points followed by Rohan Patel with 12.

Tejon Tensley and Jax Rawls each scored eight with Peyton Strickland rounding out the scoring with seven.

Monticello will travel to Crossett on Friday, February 9, and to Little Rock on Tuesday to face Mills.
