Billies seventh inning comeback falls short, 8-7, against Ricebirds

The Monticello Billies returned from Spring Break to take a conference victory on the road at Crossett on Tuesday, March 28.

Monticello would fall behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning but would take the lead in the top of the third inning on a double by Breden Brown scored three runs for a 3-1 lead.

Monticello added two runs in the top of the fifth inning on a double by Jagger Hines that scored Brown and Warren Pennington to extend the lead to 5-1. 

Crossett cut the lead to 5-4 after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

In the top of the seventh, the Billies extended the lead to 9-4 after a single by Blaine Hayden scored Jagger Hines followed by a three-run home run by Jon Luke Brotherton to left field to extend the lead to 9-4.

Crossett would get three runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Billies would record the third out halting the Eagle comeback to take the 9-7 win.

Returning home to host conference leading Stuttgart, the Ricebirds would get two runs in the top of the first inning, but Monticello would get the runs back in the bottom of the inning on scores by Kaleb Romero and Jagger Hines. 

Stuttgart retook the lead in the top of the second with a two run inning.

Monticello would retake the lead in the bottom of the third inning on scores by Evan Bealer, Pennington, and Jagger Hines for a 5-4 lead.

The Ricebirds would get three runs in the top of the fourth inning to retake the lead 7-5, and a single run in the top of the sixth to take an 8-5 lead.

Monticello would load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but their comeback would be halted with the Billies falling short after scoring two runs, 8-7.

Monticello will host the Warren Lumberjacks on Thursday, April 6, with a scheduled 5 pm start time.
