Weevils advance in GAC Championship Tournament

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils have advanced in the Great American Conference Championship Tournament after eliminating Oklahoma Baptist in a best of three series, two games to one. 

Having the opening contest rescheduled from Friday to Saturday, the Weevils and Bison would get underway for a double-header at 12 pm. 

Connor Irvine would take the mound for the Weevils in game one and would hold the Bison scoreless for the first three innings. 

The Weevils would get on the board in the bottom of the second inning.

After the first out of the inning, Kirk Woolf would single followed by a single by Aidan Garrett to advance Woolf to third. 

Parker Dorrance would double to score Woolf with Garrett advancing to third. 

Logan Jones would earn an RBI on a sacrifice fly that scored Garrett.

After back to back walks to Roc Hawthorne and Camden Tanner, Cade Cancilla would connect for a single to score Dorrance and Hawthorne to give the Weevils a 4-0 lead.

Irvine returned to the mound in the top of the third inning to get the Bison out in order.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Weevils would record an out before getting the next three batters on to load the bases with Garrett drawing a walk, Dorrance reaching on a single, and a walk to Logan Jones before the Bison would go to the bullpen for a change in pitchers.

After the pitching change, Roc Hawthorne would be hit by a pitch to score Garrett followed by a walk to Camden Tanner to score Dorrance. 

Cade Cancilla would single to left to score Jones followed by a single by Chaz Poppy to score Hawthorne and a fly out by Chase Cripps that scored Tanner to increase the Weevil lead to 9-0.

Oklahoma Baptist would get on the board in the top of the fourth inning on a solo home run to make the score 9-1. 

The Weevils would get three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a three run shot by Garrett for a 12-1 lead and added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two run home run by Poppy for the 14-1 win. 

Returning for game two, Charles Peacock would take the mound for the Weevils. 

Peacock, who earned GAC CO-Pitcher of the Week honors as well as being named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Central Region Pitcher of the Week for his seven innings, three hit, and 12 strikeout performance against Southern Arkansas University in the final regular season series, was held to four innings against Oklahoma Baptist.

UAM would get a run in the bottom of the first inning after a single by Chase Cripps scored Roc Hawthorne.

UAM added a second run in the bottom of the second inning on a Hawthorne solo home run for a 2-0 lead. 

Oklahoma Baptist would score three runs in the top of the third and would add four in the top of the fourth inning for a 7-2 lead.

OKlahoma Baptist added to their total in the top of the fifth inning with another three runs to increase the lead to 10-2.

The Weevils would get two runs in the bottom of the inning with OBU adding a run in the top of the sixth before the contest was suspended by weather and forced to move locations to Henderson State for the remainder of the contest and game three on Monday.

OBU would complete the contest on Monday taking the 11-6 win.

In game three, neither team could gain an advantage as UAM scored three in the bottom of the second with OBU getting three in the top of the third. 

Each team would score two runs in the fifth inning with OBU getting a one run lead, 6-5, in the top of the sixth inning. 

Camden Tanner would connect for a two run home run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Weevils a 7-6 lead but the Bison would tie the contest at seven in the top of the ninth inning. 

The contest would move to the bottom of the 11th inning tied at seven with the bases loaded and two outs with UAM’s Cade Cancillia at the plate. 

Cancilla would connect and reach first base on an error by the OBU third baseman with UAM’s Hawthorne scoring the go ahead winning run, 8-7.

The Weevils will now advance to the next round of the GAC Tournament with the remainder of the contests being played at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock. 

The Weevils will face Southern Arkansas on Thursday in game one at 1 pm.

UAM defeated Southern Arkansas in the final series of the regular season two games to one.
