Blossoms secure post season play with sweep over SWOSU

After picking up a series win at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, the University of Arkansas at Monticello Blossoms would return to Alvy Early Softball Field to host Southwestern Oklahoma State University in a three game series that began with a double-header on Saturday, April 22, and concluded with a single contest on Sunday, April 23.

In game one, Southwestern would take an early lead with a run in the first inning.

The Blossoms came back in the bottom of the first inning to tie the contest at one after a ground out by Grace Neal that would score Hannah Holdbrook.

The Blossoms would take the lead after a single by Bailey Camp to score Adrianna Erichsen for a 2-1 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, the Blossoms would extend their lead in the bottom of the third inning on a single by Neal scored Erichsen and a single by Sophie Wood that scored Neal to give the Blossoms a 4-1 lead.

UAM got the final runs of the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Wood would single for two RBI, scoring Neal and Kennedy Cox.

Lexie Smith doubled to left center to score Camp with the final score coming after a Madison Gardiner walk to score Madison Morrissey for the 8-1 win.

Kayla Olthouse would get five innings of work allowing one run on three hits with a strikeout to improve to 7-4 on the season. 

Sam Stephens pitched the final two innings not allowing a hit with three strikeouts. 

Sophie Wood and Adrianna Erichsen would lead the Blossoms at the plate going 2 for 3. Wood had three RBI with Erichsen scoring two runs. 

In game two of the Saturday double-header, Southwestern would get on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning and adding a run in the top of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. 

In the bottom of the second inning, Wood would single followed by a single by Lexi Smith. After the second out of the inning, Courtnee Sensibaugh would double to score Wood and Smith to tie the contest at two. 

The score would remain tied 2-2 until the bottom of the seventh inning.

After recording the first two outs of the inning, Erichsen would single followed by a single by Cox that allowed Erichsen to score on the throw to take the 3-2 win.

Sam Stephens would get the start in the no-decision, pitching 4.1 innings allowing two runs on six hits with one run earned striking out one. 

Maguire Estill was awarded the win in the contest, relieving Stephens. Estill pitched 2.2 innings allowing no hits, no runs, and struck out three improving her record to 8-7 on the season. 

Erichsen, Cox, and Camp each recorded two hits in the contest with Neal, Sensibaugh, Smith, and Wood each recording hits.

Returning on Sunday, April 23, for the final game of the series, Maguire Estill would get the call to start the game for the Blossoms. 

After a scoreless first inning, Southwestern would get a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.

The score would remain 1-0 for the next several innings until the bottom of the fifth inning. 

Maddie Pfleging led off with a single, followed by a ground out by Sensibaugh.

Erichsen would get a single to place runners at the corners.

Lexi Smith flew out to center to score Pfleging.

Kennedy Cox would seal the inning with a two run home run to give the Blossoms a 3-1 lead.

The Blossoms added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning after Madison Gardiner drew a walk to score Hannah Holdbrook to extend the Blossom lead to 4-1. 

Southwestern would add a run in the top of the seventh inning to set up the final score of 4-2.

Estill would be awarded the win, improving her overall record to 9-7, pitching the complete game, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out four, and walking two.

Erichsen and Cox each recorded two hits in the contest with Cox recording a home run.

With the win, UAM improves to 24-19 one the season and 16-14 in Great American Conference play and are currently listed in sixth in the conference standings, securing a spot in postseason play in the GAC Tournament to begin on March 4 in Bentonville, Arkansas.

The Blossoms will play their final regular season series at home beginning on Friday with a double-header at 1 pm.
