Cade Thompson breaks UAM doubles record with number 53

University of Arkansas at Monticello second baseman, Cade Thompson, had a record setting week with his only hit in a mid-week contest in Jackson, Tennessee against the Union University Bulldogs, connecting on his 53rd career double to pass former teammate Jordan Johnson for the all-time leader in the category at UAM. 

In the contest against Union University, after a scoreless first inning, the Weevils would get on the board first in the top of the second inning after Alex Austin grounded out to third to score Parker Dorrance.

Austin would earn his second RBI of the day in the top of the fourth inning on a single to center that scored Cade Cancilla. Logan Jones would connect for a single to score Dorrance for a 4-0 Weevil lead. 

UAM would add two runs in the top of the fifth inning. 

Thompson started the fifth with his record breaking double, followed by Chase Cripps being hit by a pitch.

After the first out of the inning, Cancilla would draw a walk to load the bases. Dorrance singled up the middle to score Thompson and pinch runner Kyle Frame.

The Weevils extended their lead to 10-0 in the top of the sixth inning.

The Weevils would get doubles from Dorrance and Austin to highlight the five run inning. 

The Bulldogs would get a run in the bottom of the inning and two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning with the Weevils taking the contest 10-3.

Returning to Weevils Field to face #18 ranked and Great American Conference leading Arkansas Tech.

Weather once again would force the three game series to be moved from a Friday start to a Saturday double-header and a single contest on Sunday that also had to be moved up in time due to the possibility of thunderstorms that were predicted to move into the area.

In game one on Saturday, Arkansas Tech would get on the board in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs in the inning. 

The Wonder Boys added a single run in the top of the third inning to extend their lead to 4-0 and would add three more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead. 

The Weevils would cut the lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning after a two-run homer by Cancilla that scored Kirk Woolf.

DeShuan Cordova would connect on a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 7-3.

UAM added three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull within one run, 7-6.

A Cancilla single scored Chaz Poppy and a Cordova single scored Dorrance and Cancilla for the 7-6 score.

The Weevils took the lead in the bottom of  the seventh inning after a home run by Poppy that scored Thompson for an 8-7 lead. 

Arkansas Tech came back to tie the contest, 8-8, in the top of the eighth inning.

In the bottom of the inning, Frame would single to score Grant Jeffers and Dorrance followed by a two-run home run by Thompson to set up the 12-8 final.

Thompson would connect for his 54th career double in the contest. 

UAM would drop game two of the series in the second game of the double-header, 5-3, after Tech would score five runs in the top of the seventh inning. UAM got a run in the bottom of the third on a Poppy homer and two runs in the bottom of the seventh in the loss. 

In the final game of the series on Sunday, the Weevils would get a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and would extend the lead in the third and fourth innings with a run scored in each inning to take a 6-0 lead.

Arkansas Tech would get a run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Weevils would get four runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 10-1.

Tech would score a run in the top of the eighth inning to cut the lead to 10-2 but in the bottom of the inning, Cancilla would connect on a two-run home run for a run-rule win in walk off fashion.

In the second inning, Cade Thompson moved within two doubles of the Great American Conference record, connecting on his 55th of his career.

UAM will return to action for a three game series on the road in Arkadelphia to face Henderson State with the first game scheduled for Friday, April 7, and a double-header on Saturday starting at 12 pm. 

UAM will return home to host Delta State on Tuesday, April 11, at 5 pm.
