Students in Mrs. Penny Vance’s Family and Consumer Sciences Classes at Drew Central High School, recently participated in “Get Real-Here’s the Deal.” This is a hands-on financial simulation that gives young people the opportunity to experience real life. Students are encouraged to make wise financial choices similar to those that adults face each month. As youth move from station to station, students make decisions based on their pretend family size and affordability based on their income from their jobs. Members of the community man each station. Prior to the simulation, these students completed a financial literacy unit. Students obtained skills in budgeting, check writing, and in balancing a transaction register. Students calculated taxes and other deductions taken from their gross income. “Get Real Here’s the Deal” is sponsored by the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service.
