Henderson State Reddies eliminate Weevils from GAC Tournament

The UAM Boll Weevils 2023 Baseball season came to an end in the opening round of the Great American Conference Tournament this past week against Henderson State University.

In game one on Friday, May 5, the Weevils could not get any offense going in the top of the first inning with the Weevils only baserunners coming by way of a pair of walks.

Mason Philley would allow three runs in the bottom of the first inning to give the Reddies a 3-0 lead. 

Henderson added three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to go on to shut out the Weevils 8-0, allowing only two Weevil hits in the contest with Kirk Woolf and Chase Cripps recording the hits. 

Philley would take the loss and would finish the season with an 8-5 record.

Returning for game two on Saturday in the double-elimination tournament, the Weevils would send Connor Irvine to the mound.

After a scoreless first inning, the Reddies would take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning and added a run in the bottom of the third to extend the lead to 3-0.

UAM would get on the board in the top of the fifth inning.

DeShaun Cordova drew a walk and Grant Jeffers was hit by a pitch.

After the first two outs, Woolf singled to score Cordova followed by Cade Cancilla reaching on an error to score Jeffers.

Henderson would go on to add two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and added five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to set up the final score of 10-2.

With the loss, the Weevils season came to an end with Henderson State advancing to the next round in the tournament. 

Connor Irvine would take the loss in the contest and would finish the season with a 7-5 record.

The Weevils recorded four hits in the contest with Kirk Woolf going 1 for 5, Chase Cripps was 1 for 5, Cade Cancilla was 1 for 4, and Reece Reading was 1 for 3.

The Weevils end the 2023 Season with an overall record of 31-21 and with a Great American Conference record of 20-13, and a fifth place finish in the final conference standings.
