Junior Billies beat Lumberjacks 28-6

The Monticello Junior Billies opened up rivalry week with a road win over the Warren Junior Lumberjacks on Thursday, October 20, with a 28-6 victory.

Warren would win the opening coin toss and elected to receive the football to begin the contest. 

Joseph Rojas would get the contest started after kicking the ball off to the Warren 43-yard line where the Junior Jacks would begin their first drive of the game after no return.

The Junior Billie defense would only allow the Junior Jacks to gain seven yards on the drive out to the 50-yard line before turning the ball over on downs with 6:05 remaining in the quarter. 

Joseph Accelus got the first carry on offense for the JUnior Billies, losing two yards on the play to the Monticello 48, but would gain the yards back to the 50 on the next play.

After a false start penalty placed the ball at the Monticello 45, Accelus would push the ball into Waren territory, down to the 46-yard line.

Quarterback Jackson Hines would connect with Rojas on fourth down to keep the drive alive with a completion down to the Warren 30.

Accelus moved the ball to the 26 and Hines would break free to the 12. A one-yard gain by Accelus put the ball at the 11-yard line where Hines would connect with Drayden Pharr for the Junior Billie touchdown with 2:31 remaining in the quarter. 

The two-point conversion was not successful with Warren foiling the attempt with an interception. 

With the Junior Billies leading 6-0, Warren began their next drive on the 50-yard line and the drive would extend into the second quarter.

On the first play of the second quarter, Warren would gain 14 yards for a Junior Lumberjack touchdown. 

Monticello stopped the two-point conversion as Warren tied the contest 6-6 with 7:52 remaining in the half.

Warren would force Monticello to punt on the next possession and would take over at their own 37-yard line and would advance the ball to the 50 on the next play. 

Jalen Howell would stop the Warren drive on the next play after recovering a fumble at Warren 47 with 5:52 remaining in the half. 

Monticello would cover the 47 yards in eight plays with Hines taking the ball in from 12 yards out for the Junior Billie touchdown with 1:21 remaining in the quarter. 

The two-point conversion was not successful as the Junior Billies extended the lead to 12-6.

The score would remain 12-6 through the half after Monticello forced Warren to turn the ball over on downs with one second remaining in the half.

Neither team would reach the endzone in the third quarter or for most of the fourth until Hines connected with Gavin Trotter on a three-yard score with 3:27 remaining in the contest. Accelus added the two-point play to extend the lead to 20-6. 

Monticello forced the Junior Jacks to turn the ball over on downs with 2:25 remaining in the contest and would extend the lead to 28-6 on the Junior Billie final drive of the contest after a 37-yard run by Hines and the two-point conversion by Accelus for the final score of the contest. 

Accelus and Hines each broke the 100-yard mark on the ground with Accelus gaining 114 yards and Hines gaining 111. 

The Monticello Junior Billies will return to Hyatt Field on Thursday, October 27, for the final contest of the 2022 football season, hosting the Star City Junior Bulldogs. 

Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 pm for the 7th grade contest and 7pm for the juniors.
