Junior Billies end season with 14-6 win over Star City at home

The Monticello Junior Billies ended the 2022 Junior High Football Season with a 14-6 victory over the Star City Junior Bulldogs on Thursday, 27, at Hyatt Field. 

For Monticello it was a clean sweep over Star City on Thursday night after the Seventh Grade Billies defeated the Seventh Grade Bulldogs before the Junior Billies took the field.

Monticello would win the opening coin toss and would defer to the second half. 

Monticello was penalized with a false start on the opening kickoff and after the second kickoff attempt, the Junior Bulldogs would begin their drive on their own 39-yard line. 

Star City would move the ball into MOnticello territory but the Junior Billies would force a Star City turnover after recovering a fumble at the Monticello 33.

Jackson Hines would connect with Joseph Rojas on his only completed pass of the contest for a 46-yard gain to the Star CIty 21.

Hines would push the ball to the four-yard line but a holding call against Monticello would move the ball back to the Star City 29.

Monticello regained to the 22 and a pass interference call against Star City moved the ball to the 14.

Joseph Accelus gained three yards to the 11 with John Luke Brotherton covering the 11 yards for the score. 

The two-point conversion was not successful as the Junior Billies took a 6-0 lead with 51 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Monticello forced Star City to punt on their next drive with Monticello beginning their first drive of the second quarter on their own 35.

Hines would add the next Monticello score after a 49-yard run on the drive and added the two point conversion to give Monticello a 14-0 lead with 5:12 left in the half. 

Neither team would reach the end zone in the remainder of the half with Monticello holding the 14-0 lead.

Monticello would receive the ball to start the second half with the Junior Bulldogs forcing the Junior Billies to turn the ball over on downs at the Star City 46.

Star City’s drive would extend into the fourth quarter with the Junior Bulldogs cutting the lead to 14-6 with 7:12 remaining in the contest. 

After recovering the onside kick, the Junior Bulldogs would advance the ball down to the Monticello 16 but would fumble the ball at the 16 with Star City recovering then fumbling again with Hines recovering the fumble to stop the drive to give Monticello the win.
