McGehee’s second half surge downs Billies Tuesday night 48-36

The Monticello Billies looked to get their fourth win of the season on Tuesday against the McGehee Owls on Tuesday, December 12, before heading into Friday’s annual “Showdown in M-Town” against the Drew Central Pirates at Dan Coston Fieldhouse.

Against McGehee, the Billies would control the opening tip and would score the first three points of the contest before McGehee got on the board on a three-pointer by Traelyn Fitch.

Quay Rhodes broke the tie with a layup but McGehee’s Ja’Corrian Love would tie the contest at five with Rhodes once again breaking the tie with a two.

Fitch connected on a three followed by a two by Love to increase the Owl lead to 10-7 before Jax Rawls scored under the basket to make the first quarter score 10-9.

Monticello’ Tejon Tensley would lead the Billies in the second quarter with 10 points in the quarter to help the Billies outscore the Owls 16-14 in the quarter to take a 25-24 at the break heading into the locker room. 

After the break, the Billies scoring would go cold as the Owls would take control of the contest in third quarter, holding the Billies to four points while scoring 13 to hold a 37-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter of play. 

In the fourth quarter, Tensley would score all of the Billies fourth quarter points, scoring seven points in the quarter with McGehee scoring 11 in the quarter to take a 12-point, 48-36, victory. 

‘Tensley would lead the Billies on the scoreboard with 19 points followed by Quay Rhodes with seven, Jax Rhodes with five, and Keilyn Greene rounding out the scoring with two points. 

With the loss the Billies fall to 3-5 heading into Friday’s rival game with Drew Central who will enter the contest with an overall record of 7-4.

The junior boys are scheduled to take to the court first at Monticello with a 5 pm tip scheduled.
