The Alex Foundation, based in Dermott, received a grant in the amount of $189,899 from the National Endowment for the Humanities. This grant was for their project A Sense of Place: Architecture, Culture, and History in the Arkansas Delta. This project was two one-week residential programs for 60 K-12 educators that taught about local architecture and history in the Arkansas Delta.

“This teachers' professional-development workshop focused on architecture and its reflections of our history, culture, and values is very valuable for our community, and it makes a contribution nationally because the teachers accepted into the workshop will be from across the nation,” said Mark Spencer, Associate Vice Chancellor at the University of Arkansas at Monticello and project team member.

“The project gives us the opportunity to heighten the public's awareness of the rich history of our region and to underscore the importance of honoring our history and learning from it so that we can avoid the mistakes and injustices of the past.”

“Our grant is aligned with this program with a focus on architecture of historic places, including UA Monticello's Taylor House at the Hollywood Plantation and Monticello's Historic District homes, among others,” Angela Courtney, Project Manager, added.
