Pirates fall to Lakeside, DeWitt

The Drew Central Pirates finished their regular season schedule, losing the final four games with their first two losses of the streak coming to conference leaders Dumas, 57-41, and McGehee, 71-59.

Hosting the Lakeside Beavers on Tuesday, February 6, Drew Central would honor their 2024 senior players and cheerleaders before the senior girls took to the court.

Drew Central would win the opening tip, but it was Lakeside that would get on the board first with Davion Johnson scoring the first two points of the contest. 

Alex Preddy would get the Pirates on the board on the Pirates next possession with two points under the basket. 

The Beavers would score the next four points to hold a 6-2 lead with 2:50 remaining in the quarter. 

Preddy would score another shot under the basket followed by a two by Tre’Bennett Fuller to tie the contest at six points with 1:29 remaining. 

Lakeside’s Rakebrien Wallace would connect on a three to give the Beavers a 9-6 lead but Drew Burton would answer the score with a three to tie the contest at nine at the end of the quarter. 

Burton would begin the second quarter with a three pointer to break the tie.

The Pirates would get points from Zae Bullard, Preddy, Jeremiah Bodiford, and a three from Burton to end the half to help the Pirates outscore 10-5 for a 19-14 lead headed into the locker room at the halftime break.

The Pirates would increase the lead to eight points with Burton connecting on his fourth three pointer of the contest to give the Pirates a 22-14 lead.

Lakeside scored the next four points before Burton connected on his fifth three of the contest. 

Lakeside would outscore the Pirates 19-10 in the quarter to hold a 33-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter. 

Burton would connect on his sixth three of the game in the fourth quarter and would outscore Lakeside 12-11 but would fall short 44-41.

Burton led with 18 points followed by Alex Preddy with eight, Tre’Bennett Fuller and Zae Bullard with five, Jeremiah Bodiford with three, and Blake Chandler with two.

The Pirates would end the regular season with a 50-46 loss to DeWitt to finish fifth in 8-3A Conference play.

Bodiford led the way with 12 points followed by Preddy with 10, Fuller with eight, Bullard with seven, Chandler with six, and Burton with three.
