The University of Arkansas at Monticello picked up their first win of the season in the second annual “Billie Ball’ game held at 12 pm on Thursday, November 16, with the visitor section filled with screaming and chanting Monticello Billie elementary students.
For the Weevils, it would be the first game at Steelman Fieldhouse that counted toward their record as the Weevils had previously won an exhibition contest, 105-50, against John Melvin University.
Hosting Hendrix College, UAM would get control of the tip but would miss a three pointer on their first shot attempt but would get on the board first a few seconds later on two made free throw shots by Issac Jackson.
Cole Anderson would give the Weevils a four point lead on two successful free throws on the Weevils next possession.
Hendrix’s Caleb Squires cut the lead to one one a three pointer, but Jackson increased the lead back to three on a dunk in the paint.
The Weevils would begin to pull away from the Warriors in the first half, ending the half with one of their biggest leads of the half on a three pointer by Zane Nelson at the buzzer to end the half, giving UAM a 16-point, 33-16, lead.
The Weevils continued to build onto their lead in the second half with the lead reaching the largest of the contest on a three by Jackson with 4:35 remaining in the contest to give the Weevils a 29-point, 66-37, lead.
The Weevils would go on to a 27-point victory over the Warriors by the score of 72-45.
Issac Jackson led the Weevils with 32 points followed by a 22 point performance by Zane Nelson, who is one of the new editions to this year's Weevil team.
Wesley Booker added six points and Cole Anderson added four points.
Zae Wiggins and Donovan Cooper each scored three with AK Hazely rounding out the scoring with two points.
UAM will host the Turkey Special over the Thanksgiving break with the Blossoms and Weevils returning to Steelman Fieldhouse on Saturday, November 25, in free admission games beginning at 1 pm.
