Weevils drop heartbreaker at Southeastern 22-21 for fourth loss

The University of Arkansas at Monticello would play the first of two consecutive road contests on Saturday, October 7, traveling to Durant, Oklahoma to face the Savage Storm of Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

The Weevils came into the contest with a Great American Conference record of 2-3 having lost their last three contests. 

Southeastern entered the contest with a conference record of 1-4.

UAM would win the coin toss and elected to receive the football with Michael McCorveytaking the ball at the UAM four and returning the ball 12 yards out to the 16. 

Neither team could get any offensive momentum going in the first quarter with UAM extending their final drive of the quarter into the second with a first down pass to Isaiah Cross from Buddy Taylor for eight yards to the Southeastern 45. 

Gary Freeman would take the ball to the Southeastern 40 on the first carry of the second quarter.

UAM advanced the ball down to the Southeastern nine yard line where Taylor connected with Jovonnie Gibson for the nine yard strike. 

Zachary Grisotti added the extra point to give the Weevils a 7-0 lead. 

UAM would force the Savage Storm  punt on their next possession with the Weevils taking over at the Southeastern 40.

On the first play from scrimmage on the drive, Taylor connected with LeCedric Smith for a 40-yard strike. 

Grisotti added the extra point to give the Weevils a 14-0 lead with 6:58 remaining in the half.

The score would hold until the end of the half.

Southeastern received the ball to begin the second half of play with Grisotti’s kick sailing  65 yards for a touchback to give the Savage Storm possession at the Southeastern 30 after a false start penalty against the Weevils. 

The Savage Storm would cut the lead to 14-7 on the drive, covering the 70 yards in six plays, capped off with a 19-yard pass from WestonConaway to Marquis Gray for the score. 

Dylan Cox added the extra point.

Southeastern intercepted a Taylor pass on the UAM 40 with a six yard return to the 34 where the Savage Storm began their next possession.

Southeastern advanced the ball to the UAM seven but would have to settle for a field goal to cut teh UAM lead to 14-10 with 7:27 remaining in the quarter. 

UAM would begin their next possession at their own 33 after a 24-yard kick return by Arlie Lee. 

On first down from Southeastern 44, Taylor would connect with Cross for a 36-yard pass to the Southeastern eight. 

After a two-yard gain by Glen Cage to the six, Taylor would keep the ball, taking it in form six yards out for the UAM score.

Grisotti added the extra point to extend the lead to 21-10. 

Southeastern would cut the lead to 21-16 with 4:12 remaining in the fourth quarter after scoring on a 28-yard touchdown pass on fourth down. 

After forcing UAM to punt, the Savage Storm would complete their comeback with their final drive of the contest. 

On third down from the UAM 14, Conway’s pass fell incomplete but UAM would be flagged for pass interference, giving the Savage Storm a first down at the UAM two.

With four seconds remaining in the contest, Conaway would complete a pass to Gray as time expired to secure the win for the Savage Storm 22-21.

UAM travels  to  Arkansas Tech Saturday for a 2 pm kick.
