Weevils fall to NWOSU, pick up conference win over SWOSU

The University of Arkansas Monticello Weevils split the week’s Great American Conference contests held this past week at Steelman Fieldhouse. 

On Thursday, the Weevils would host Northwestern Oklahoma State University followed by a matchup against Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Saturday.

Against NWOSU, the Weevils hald a single digit lead for most of the first half with the only double-digit lead coming with 5:31 remaining in the half on a three by Issac Jackson. 

NWOSU would chip away at the lead to trail by three, 27-24, at the end of the half.

The Weevils led or kept the game tie until the 10:43 mark in the second half. 

NWOSU would lead for the remainder of the contest with the exception of UAM tying the contest at the 5:16 point with the score 52-52 but the Rangers would retake the lead, defeating UAM by four points, 65-61.

The Weevils would return on Saturday to host SWOSU, picking up their second GAC win of the season. 

The Weevils would lead the Bulldogs for much of the first half, pushing their lead to double-digits on a jumper by Zane Nelson to give the Weevils a 10 point, 19-9 lead. 

UAM would increase their lead to 15 points, 25-10, on a layup by Josh Denton before taking a 13 point, 25-12, lead into the locker room at the break.

UAM would lead until the Bulldogs tied the contest at 52 with 2:16 remaining in the half and would retake the lead until SWOSU tied the contest at 54 with 11 seconds remaining in the game. 

On UAM’s final possession, Issac Jackson would lay the ball in as time expired to give the Weevils the 56-54 victory. 

The Weevils (4-7, 2-4 GAC) will travel to Oklahoma this week for games against East Central on Thursday and Southeastern on Saturday.
