Weevils secure fifth seed to the GAC Tournament with win over OBU

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Weevils completed the 2023-24 regular season with two consecutive wins against Harding University and Ouachita Baptist.

The Weevils would get the victory over Harding on Thursday, February 29, after a jumper by Zane Nelson with one second remaining to give the Weevils a two point, 65-63, win.

With the win, it marked the 200th win of head coach Chad Tapp’s coaching career. 

Leading the way for the Weevils was Zane Nelson with 20 points followed by Issac Jackson with 16, and Josh Denton with 13.

Timur Krupalija and Alex Brogdon each scored five with Wesley Booker and Ty-Reonn King scoring three.

The Weevils returned to Steelman Fieldhouse to host Ouachita Baptist on Saturday in the final regular contest of the season. 

UAM would begin the contest on an 8-0 run and would hold a four point, 26-22, lead at the half.

The Weevils would outscore OBU 39.32 in the second half to take the 65-54 victory. 

Issac Nelson led the way with 22 points followed by Zane Nelson with 21 points and Josh Denton with 14.

Timur Krupalija, Cole Anderson, Wesley Booker, and Alex Brogdon each finished with two points. 

With the win, the Weevils enter the GAC Championship Tournament as the fifth seed and marks the Weevils first appearance in the tournament since their championship run in the 2020-21 season.

The Weevils will enter the tournament with an 13-14 overall record and an 11-11 GAC record.

 The Weevils will face Southern Nazarene on March 8 at 12 pm in Shawnee, Oklahoma with radio coverage by 93.7 KHBM.
