Weevils take consecutive wins to move to 5-5 in conference

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils returned to Steelman Fieldhouse this past week for a pair of games against Oklahoma Baptist University on Thursday and Southern Nazarene University on Saturday.

Facing Oklahoma Baptist, the Bison would begin the contest with a three pointer, but Issac Jackson and Zane Nelson would hit back-to-back three points to take the lead.

Both teams would battle back and forth for most of the half with OBU holding the largest lead of the contest at nine points on a basket with 20 seconds remaining.

OBU would hold a 35-26 lead at the break.

Returning from the half, OBU would continue to lead the Weevils, extending the lead to 12 points at the 12:56 mark.

UAM would begin to cut into the Bison lead with the Weevils tying the contest with 2:55 remaining in the contest on a free throw by Zane Nelson.

Nelson would give the Weevils the lead on a three pointer, 58-55, with 1:35 on the clock before closing the contest with a two point, 59-57, victory.

Zane Nelson would lead the Weevils in scoring with 23 points followed by Issac Jackson with 21 points.

Josh Denton, Wesley Booker, and Alex Brogdon each scored four points with Timur Krupalija rounding out the scoring with three points.

Returning on Saturday to face Southern Nazarene University the Crimson Storm would start the contest with a 6-0 run on consecutive three pointers.

Issac Jackson would hit a three to make the score 6-3.

SNU continued to lead throughout the half with their largest lead coming with 4:14 remaining in the half at eight points, 27-19.

UAM would cut the lead to three points as the half expired on a jumper by Zane Nelson for a 31-28 Crimson Storm advantage.

UAM cut the lead to one point on a layup by Krupalja to begin the second half.

A layup by Issac Jackson with 15:47 remaining in the contest would tie the contest at 34. After a free throw by SNU that broke the tie, Wesley Booker would get a dunk to give the Weevils a 36-35 lead.

UAM would lead for the remainder of the contest putting an exclamation point on the victory with a dunk by Issac Jackson with four seconds left in the contest to give the Weevils a 64-52 victory to secure their second consecutive Great American Conference win to move to 5-5 in GAC play.

Issac Jackson led the way with 20 points followed by Zane Nelson with 17.

Josh Denton and Timur Krupalija each scored eight points, Wesley Booker with six points, Cole Anderson with three, and Ty’Reonn King with two points.

On the season, Issac Jackson currently leads Zane Nelson on total points scored by 14 points with Jackson having 302 and Nelson with 292.

The Weevils will return to Steelman Fieldhouse on Thursday, January 25, hosting Southern Arkansas University with a 7:30 pm tip scheduled before traveling to Russellville to face Arkansas Tech on Saturday with a 3 pm tip scheduled.
