Weevils take final season series from SAU

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Weevils will enter the GAC Tournament as the fifth seed after taking the final series against the Southern Arkansas University Muleriders to end the regular season. 

In game one of a double-header on Friday, April 28, the conference leading Muleriders would fall behind in the first inning after Chaz Poppy connected for his eighth home run of the season and a three-run shot that also scored Cade Cancilla and Cade Thompson for a 3-0 lead.

The Weevils would add a run in the top of the third inning on a sole home run by Parker Dorrance and a home run in the top of the fourth by Grant Jeffers to give the Weevils a 5-o lead.

SAU would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with a single run and in the bottom seventh inning with three runs to cut the lead to 5-4 before the Weevils extended the lead to 8-4 in the top of the eighth  after adding three runs. 

SAU got nine runs in the bottom of the eight inning to take the lead and pull away from the Weevils for the 13-8 win.

In game two, Sau would score one run in the bottom of third inning after two scoreless innings to take a 1-0 lead. 

The Weevils would take the lead in the top of the fifth inning with a four run inning. 

Jeffers would single to score Dorrance. Kyle Frame would reach on a fielder’s choice that scored DeShaun Cordova.

Case Cripps and Cancilla would walk to score Jeffers and Frame for the 4-1 score that would hold to the end of the game for the Weevils. 

Mason Philley would pick up his eighth win of the season and would record 11 strikeouts to finish the season with 124 total strikeouts on the season. 

Returning Saturday for the final game of the series, The Weevils would get a run in the top of the first inning on a fly out by Cancilla that scored Cripps.

SAU got three runs in the bottom of the inning with UAM getting two runs in the top of the second on a Thompson single that scored Jeffers and Alex Austin.

After six innings of play, the game was tied 8-8 with the seventh and eighth innings going scoreless, the Weevils would retake the lead with two runs in the top of the ninth inning and would hold the Muleriders scoreless in the bottom of the inning to take the 10-8 win.

With the win the Weevils finish the regular season with a record of 31-19 and a GAC record of 20-13 and enter the GAC Tournament as the fifth seed and will face Henderson State on Friday at 6 pm and Saturday at 1 pm.
