Baseball Weevils begin season 2-1 at the Houston Invitational

The 2025 UAM Baseball season is officially underway with the Weevils beginning the season by going 2-1 at the Houston Invitational in Houston, Texas at  Daikin Park, home of the Houston Astros.

The Weevils would open the season on Friday, January 30, with a 10 am first pitch against Mississippi College, a team that the Weevils have faced 34 times before the 2025 matchup with the Weevils holding a 20-14 lead in the head to head matchup but Mississippi College came into the contest winning both contests against the Weevils last season.

Connor Irvine would get the opening day start for the Weevils  and would give up two singles in the first with the Weevils getting out of the inning without Mississippi crossing the plate.

Roc Hawthorne would lead off for the Weevils with a walk and would steal second base.

Camden Tanner would get the first single of the contest and would advance to second on a walk to Kirk Woolf that loaded the bases. 

After the first two outs, Cade Cancilla would single to left to score Hawthorne and Tanner to give the Weevils a 2-0 lead.

UAM would get a third run in the bottom of the third inning after Woolf scored on a wild pitch for the 3-0 lead.

Mississippi College would get runs in the top of the fifth and seventh innings to cut the lead to 3-2 but the Weevils would send in Nelson Mercado who would get his first save of the season in the 3-2 victory.

Irvine would be the winning pitcher.

The Weevils would return on Saturday to face #3 Central Missouri, the team that knocked the Weevils out of the Super Regionals last season.

Lane Imhoff would get the start for UAM.

The Weevils would get four runs in the top of the first inning to give Imhoff a 4-0 cushion to begin the contest.

Imhoff held Central Missouri scoreless for two innings.

Central Missouri would get two runs in the bottom of the third inning with UAM getting two in the top of the fifth for a 6-2 lead.

Central Missouri added two runs in the bottom of the seventh with each team getting a run in the top and bottom of the eighth.

Kyle Roop would come on for the save with Imhoff picking up his first win of the season.

In the final contest of the invitational, the Weevils would take the field against #18 Ashland.

Ashland would get the first run of the contest in the top of the first but UAM would score three in the bottom of the third.

Ashlad scored two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the contest at three. 

UAM scored two in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead 5-3.

Ashland would add three runs in the top of the seventh to retake the lead 6-5, the final score of the contest.

With the loss, UAM leaves Houston with a 2-1 record to begin the season.

The Weevils will host Missouri Western on Saturday in a double-header beginning at 2 pm. 

For the first time in history, the Weevils will play under the lights at home in the second contest set for 5 pm.
