The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils notched their first win of the season on the hardwood with a 66-60 win over the visiting Champion Christian College on Thursday in a special day contest for the “Billie Ballgame.”
The 12:30 pm tip off was set for a packed crowd of Monticello School District classes from the elementary and intermediate schools that came to back the Weevils and provided, at times, what could be called ear-piercing levels of noise inside Steelman Fieldhouse.
The Weevils came into Thursday’s contest having started the season with an 0-2 record after competing in the Central region Challenge on November 9 and November 10 with a 64-55 loss to Bemidji State University on Saturday and a 58-42 loss to Minnesota State University-Moorhead on Sunday.
Champion would enter Steelman with an 0-4 record on the season.
Alex Brogdon would control the opening tip to give the Weevils the first possession of the contest that would end with Harouna Sissoko laying it in for the first points of the contest for the Weevils.
The Weevils would take a 6-0 lead after a layup by Brogdon and Seth Grandberry.
Champion would tie the contest later in the first half with 5:50 on the clock on a layup by EJ Anderson to knot the contest at 25.
The Weevils would retake the lead but Champion would tie the contest at 33 with 51 seconds in the half to set up the halftime break.
UAM would trail for most of the second half until a Devin Davis jumper gave the Weevils the lead with 4:56 remaining in the contest.
UAM would never trail again in the contest, taking a 66-60 win to improve to 1-2 on the season.
The Weevils would have three players in double-digit scoring with Seth Granberry leading the way with 20, Devin Davis with 12, and Harouna Sissoko with 11.
Noah Thomas and Alex Brogdon each had eight with Jamir Turner with seven
The Weevils return Saturday at 3 pm to face Arkansas Baptist.
