Diamond Weevils drop weekend series with Ouachita Baptist

Weather would once again play a factor in the University of Arkansas at Monticello Weevils baseball schedule. 

Weather had forced the Weevils to move their scheduled conference series against Southeastern Oklahoma State University to a Sunday-Monday schedule from the scheduled Friday-Saturday schedule. 

The series was also moved from UAM to Sterlington, Louisiana.

In the series with Southeastern, the Weevils would score 16 runs on 14 hits in the opening game of the series to take a 16-6, seven inning, victory.

The Weevils would score two runs in the first, one in the third, three in the fifth, six in the sixth, and four in the bottom half of the seventh to close the game.

Lane Ladner would get the win for the Weevils with two innings of work, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out one.

Derrek Potts got the start on the mound for the Weevils, throwing five innings, allowing four runs on five hits while walking seven and striking out four.

Kirk Woolf led the Weevils at the plate going 3 for 4, scoring four runs with an RBI and a walk. 

Reece Reading would have 4 RBI in the contest with Cade Cancilla with 3 RBI.

In game two, the Weevils would get a complete game from Connor Irvine in a 5-2 win.

After a tied contest at one after the second inning, the Weevils would put up four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-1 lead and would allow one run for the opponent in the top of the fifth to set up the 5-2 win.

Irvine would pitch seven innings in the win, allowing two runs on six hits while walking three and striking out six.

Noah Estrem and Cancilla each recorded triples in the bottom of the third inning.

Logan Jones finished the day with 2 RBI.

Returning on Monday in Sterlington to finish the series with Southeastern, The Weevils would get six innings of work from Mason Philley, but the Weevils would fall in the last game of the series 5-3.

Philley would exit the mound after the sixth inning with the score tied at two, but the Weevils would allow two runs in the top of the seventh and one in the eighth with the Weevils adding a run in the bottom of the ninth for the 5-3 loss.

Philley would allow two runs on nine hits, walking one, hitting one, and striking out four. 

River Hunt would record the loss after three innings of work, allowing three runs on two hits, walking three and striking out one. 

DeShaun Cordova and Woolf would record doubles in the contest.

Cancilla recorded 2 RBI.

The weather would play a factor in the Weevils series with Ouachita Baptist last weekend as well, pushing the three game series to another Sunday-Monday schedule.

Playing a double-header on Sunday, March 5, The Weevils would trail the Tigers 2-1 after the completion of two innings but would take the lead in the bottom of the third after scoring two runs for a 3-2 lead.

Ouachita would tie the contest in the top of the fourth and would add two runs in the top of the seventh for the 5-3 win.

Drrek Potts would throw for six innings, allowing three runs on five hits, walking four, hitting one, and striking out four in the no-decision. 

Lane Ladner would take the loss allowing two runs on three hits, walking two and striking out three.

The Weevils got RBI from Chase Cripps, Cancilla, and Torrin Vaselenak.

In game two of the double-header,  Connor Irvine would pick up his first loss of the season in a complete game loss, 3-0.

Irvine would throw seven innings, allowing runs in the top of the second and two in the top of the sixth. 

Irvine would allow nine hits, one walk, and would record eight strikeouts.

The Weevils would record four hits in the shutout loss with Parker Dorrance, Woolf, Cancilla, and Estrem recording hits in the game. 

Returning for the final game of the series on Monday, March 6, The Weevils would send Mason Philley to the bump and would get seven innings, no runs on four hits while walking two, hitting one batter, and striking out 10 in the shutout win.

Offensively, the Weevils would record four doubles and two home runs in the game.

The Weevils would get doubles from Chaz Poppy, Alex Austin, Noah Estrem, and Logan Jones.

Cade Thompson would connect on his third home run of the season with Kirk Woolf hitting his seventh of the year.

Alex Austin would record 4 RBI on the day.

The Weevils would defeat Ouachita Baptist 13-0 in seven innings.

The Weevils returned to the field on Tuesday, March 7, for a midweek non conference match-up against Southern Arkansas University at Weevil Field. 

The Weevils and Muleriders were tied up at one run after the completion of the second inning.

The Weevils would score two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead but SAU would score four in the top of the fourth and six in the top of the sixth and six in the top of the eight to take a 17-4 win.

The Weevils would use five pitchers in the loss with Charles Peacock getting the loss in the contest to fall to 0-2 on the season. 

Cade Cancilla would hit his sixth double of the season with Chaz Poppy connecting on his second home run of the season while recording 2 RBI.

Cancilla and Poppy would each finish the contest by going 2 for 3 from the plate.

The Weevils are currently 11-7 overall with a Great American Conference record of  6-3 and are currently third in the conference. 

The Weevils will return to the field on Friday, March 9, to start a three game series with conference opponent Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.

Game one of the series will be on Friday with a 6 PM start and the series will conclude on Saturday, March 10, with a double-header beginning at 1 PM and the second game to follow.

The Weevils will host Delta State University on Tuesday, March 13, in a  midweek non conference contest with the first pitch set to begin at 3 PM.
