Three seasons ago, the Monticello Lady Billies would welcome a new head coach for the girls soccer team.
Coach Zach Young came into a program that had not seen success in several seasons and had not made the postseason in a decade.
That season, Coach Young, along with assistant coaches Rolando Perez and Greg Fallon, finished the season with the Lady Billies making the postseason and a Coach of the Year award for Coach Young.
In his second season as the head coach, Coach Young and his assistants made history as they led the Lady Billies to their first Conference Championship in school history securing a number one seed to the state tournament, even though they would lose in the first round to Magnolia, and Coach Young earned his second Coach of the Year Award.
Fast forward to this season, the Lady Billies have a conference record of 6-0-1 after defeating the Stuttgart Ricebirds on Tuesday night, setting up a showdown with the Warren Lady Lumberjacks on Friday at 5 pm.
Against the Ricebirds, Montcello’s JaNiyah Goodman would score the first goal of the contest.
Monticello would score seven goals in the contest with Goodman scoring two, Kalle Laudell with two, Terrionna Lambert, Sally Perez, and Montre Burnett each scoring a goal.
Stuttgart would score three goals in the contest with the final two goals coming at the end of the contest to make the score 7-3.
Monticello will now face Warren on Friday night.
A win will give the Lady Billies their second conference championship, a tie will drop them to second place, and a loss will drop them to the third position in the conference.
