Mason Philley named 2023 GAC Pitcher of the Year

University of Arkansas at Monticello senior pitcher, Mason Philley, has been named as the 2023 Great American Conference Pitcher of the Year.

The Monticello native ends his career with the Weevils as the all-time strikeout leader, passing UAM Hall of Famer David Stover’s mark of 285, setting a new number of 357.

Philley also set the single season record for strikeouts with 127, surpassing Chad Yates’ mark of 117 that was set in 1993.

Philley ends his career with an earned run average of 4.94, appearing in 65 contests and starting in 46 games.

Philley amassed a career record of 18-14 pitching a total of 280.2 innings.

Philley was also an All-GAC First Team selection. 

Joining Philley as an All-GAC First Team selection was senior Cade Thompson.

Thompson also broke several UAM records in his senior season as a Weevil.

Thompson was also selected as a part of the GAC All-Defensive team.

Thompson ends his career at UAM after setting the record for career doubles with 55, passing former teammate Jordan Johnson who set the record in 2022 with 52.

Thompson also passed Jordan in the record books breaking the career runs mark with 203 that broke Jordan’s record of 195 also set in the 2022 season.

Thompson set a third record at UAM in the 2023 season with 148 career walks, passing Brian Ray’s mark of 144 set in 2018.

Thompson leaves UAM with a career batting average of .339 going 252 for 744 with 55 doubles, a triple, 203 runs scored, 21 home runs, and 123 RBI with a slugging percentage of .500.

Thompson has also been selected as a 2022-23 Academic All-District team as selected by the College Sports Communicators for their achievements on the field and in the classroom.

Senior pitcher River Hunt was selected as an All-GAC Second Team with sophomore catcher Chazz Poppy also receiving the honor.

All-GAC Honorable Mention selections for the Weevils were Kirk Wolf, Chase Cripps, and pitcher Connor Irvine.
