The Drew Central Pirates entered their second contest of the 2023 season, hosting the Mayflower Eagles from the 4A-4 Conference on Friday, September 1.

The Pirates would win the opening coin toss and would receive the football but Mayflower would open the game up with a successful onside kick at the Pirate 43.

On the first carry of the contest, Mayflower would fumble the football with Drew Central’s Hunter Phillips recovering the ball for the turnover at the Pirate 36.

The Pirates would move the ball downfield, reaching the Mayflower 14 before a bad snap backed the Pirates to the Mayflower 30.

The Pirates would turn the ball over on downs at the 30.

Mayflower would take over with 4:44 remaining in the quarter and would cover the 70 yards for the first touchdown of the contest after a three yard run by Arturo Acosta.

Calan Cowdrey added the extra point to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead.

Drew Central’s next drive would carry over into the second quarter.

The Pirates began the drive on their own 35 after the Eagle kick went out of bounds.

Once more the Pirates would drive deep into Mayflower territory but the drive would stall at the Mayflower seven where the Pirates turned the ball over on downs with 5:58 remaining in the half.

Mayflower would also turn the ball over on downs with 3:44 remaining in the half but the Pirates would give the ball back at the 2:39 mark.

Mayflower would increase their lead to 14-0 before the end of the half on a pass from Frankie Fennell to Acosta for a seven yard touchdown.

After the extra-point, the Eagles would hold a 14-0 lead at the half.

Mayflower would get three more scores in the second half to take a 34-0 lead.

The Pirates would get on the board in the fourth quarter after beginning their drive on their own 20 yard line.

Mixing the run and pass, plus a little extra help from a 15-yard personal foul penalty against Mayflower, the Pirates would move the ball down to the Eagle one before Jayden Jones would take the ball in for the score.

Tre’Bennett Fuller would add the two-point conversion to set the final score of 34-8.

The Pirates will host D’arbonne Woods Friday at 7 pm.
