The Monticello Billies and the Drew Central Pirates will wrap up their regular season football schedules this week with each team’s contest having playoff implications.
For the Drew Central Pirates, the road to the 3A State Championship Football Playoffs became harder after Drew Central travelled to Palestine-Wheatley last Friday night, needing one win to qualify for the playoffs.
Palestine would prevent the Pirates from achieving their playoff goal with a 28-8 win over the Pirates, sending the Pirates home to focus on their final opportunity to make the playoffs, needing to defeat the Dumas Bobcats on Friday night to earn a fifth seed.
For the Pirates it has come down to a win and your in and a loss begins basketball season.
Drew Central will host Dumas at Mike Pennington Stadium on Thursday with kickoff at 7 pm.
For the Monticello Billies, the playoff implications are more about seeding since the Billies have secured a position in the 4A State Championship Tournament.
The Billies will host the DeWitt Dragons on Friday with a 7 pm kickoff.
If the Billies defeat the Dragons, Monticello will enter the playoffs as the second seed in the conference and would host at least two playoff games.
In DeWitt, the Billies will be facing the number one rushing team in the conference, but DeWitt will also be facing the number one rushing defense in the conference.
With a loss to DeWitt, other contests around the conference will play a role in the playoff seeding.
Depending how the other conference games play out, Monticello could possibly fall as far as a fourth seed and would then have to travel for the opening game.
