Pirates and Lady Pirates drop home conference contests to Rison

The Drew Central Pirates and the Lady Pirates hosted the Rison Wildcats and Ladycats on Tuesday, April 15, in a pair of 3A-8 Conference games for both teams.

For the Pirates, Drew Central would be facing Rison for the second time this season with the Wildcats coming into the contest at the top of the 3A-8.

Drew Central would enter the contest with a 3-3 conference record and a fourth place standing.

The Pirates three conference wins came against Helena on March 11 in a 15-0 win, Dumas on March 21, defeating Dumas 12-2, and a second win against Helena on Friday, April 11, in a 24-2 victory.

The Pirates first conference loss came against Rison on March 13 at Rison by the score of 16-1 followed by losses to McGehee, 7-0, and DeWitt, 10-0.

On Tuesday, the Pirates would send Jordan Jones to the hill to face the Rison offense.

Jones would begin the contest getting the first Rison batter to line out to center field, followed by two consecutive strikeouts to end the inning.

Rison would also get the Pirates out in order in the bottom of the first inning.

Rison would score all four of their runs in the contest in the top of the second inning. 

The Wildcats would begin the inning with two straight singles before Jones got the third batter out on strikes.

A walk would load the bases for the Wildcats followed by a double that would score two runs.

Rison’s third run would come by way of a dropped strike three in which Brailyn Moore would throw the batter out at first but Rison would send the runner from third to score the run.

The final run of the inning would come on a single to give Rison the 4-0 lead.

Drew Central would be held to one run in the contest, coming in the bottom of the fifth inning after Jon Lawrenz scored on a wild pitch.

Lawrenz would also record the only Pirates hit in the contest on a single in the bottom of the seventh inning in the 4-1 loss.

The Lady Pirates would come into Tuesday’s contest with a 1-3 conference record and a fourth place standing with Rison in second in the conference with a 3-1 record.

Rison would get on the board early in the first inning taking a one run lead before each team going scoreless for the next three innings.

Rison would extend the lead in the top of the fifth to 5-0 after scoring four runs in the inning followed by a five run inning in the top of the sixth for a 10- lead.

The Lady Pirates would get two runs in the bottom of the sixth to avoid the run rule with Rison scoring a single run in the top of the seventh inning to take the 11-2 win.

Drew Central's next conference contests will be on Tuesday, April 22, with both teams travelling to Dumas to face the Bobcats at 4:30 pm.
