Pirates defeat McGehee in overtime comeback, fall to Lakeside

The Drew Central Pirates entered Tuesday night's contest with McGehee Owls with a perfect 3-0 8-3A Conference record with the Owls entering with a 2-1 conference record.

McGehee would start the contest on a 5-0 run and would go on to outscore the Pirates 13-9 in the first quarter with five of the Pirates points coming from Benjamin Fulmer.

The Pirates would come back to outscore the Owls in the second quarter, 11-8, but would trail the owls by one point, 21-20, at the half.

Both teams would play even in the third quarter with the teams each scoring 17 points in the quarter with McGehee still clinging onto a one point, 38-37, lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Owls would extend the lead to three points to begin the fourth quarter, but Fulmer would hit a game tying three on the Pirates next possession.

The game would remain close with the Owls holding a three-point, 46-43, lead with 2:31 remaining in the contest.

McGehee continued to hold on to the three point lead and would miss crucial free throws in the final seconds of the quarter to allow the PIrates to come back to tie the contest at 50 as time expired in the quarter to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Pirates found their range from the freethrow line as Blake Chandler would go six of eight from the line to give the Pirates a 13-3 advantage in the overtime period for the 63-53 win.

On Friday, the Pirates would put their 4-0 conference mark on the line, travelling to Lake Village to face the Lakeside Beaver.

After leading 32-26 at the half, the Pirates would lose the third quarter after the Beavers would outscore the Pirates 14-9 in the quarter with the Pirates still maintaining the lead 41-40 heading into the fourth.

In the fourth, the Beavers would take the quarter by two points to hand the Pirates their first conference loss of the season, 57-56.
