Pirates defeat Palestine-Wheatley to remain in 3A State Tournament hunt

The Drew Central Pirates have seemed to righted the ship after a road loss the previous week at Barton put the Pirates 3A State Playoff Tournament chances in jeopardy.

The loss at Barton was the Pirates second consecutive conference loss, putting the Pirates at 2-3 in conference play with spots four through seven in the conference standings  all having a record of 2-3.

For the Pirates to have a shot at making the postseason after the defeat at Barton, several things would need to happen in conference play the next week, starting with the Pirates having to defeat Palestine-Wheatley.

The Pirates would come back from a deficit at the halftime break to take the lead and defeat the Patriots behind Tre’Bennett Fuller scored three touchdowns on 25 carries and gained 218 yards.

Fuller would not be the only 200-yard performance as he was joined by teammate Tyviance Wormley who carried the ball 24 times for 216 yards and two touchdowns in the 35-26 win.

With the win, the Pirates would move from seventh in the conference standing to fourth after the Friday night games played out.

With one more game on the regular season schedule, there are several scenarios that come into play.

If McGehee can defeat Fordyce and the Pirates can defeat Dumas, the Pirates will enter the state tournament as a third seed.

A loss to Dumas and the Pirates could fall to fifth depending on the outcomes of Lake Village at Pelestine Wheatley who the Pirates have a win advantage over, however the winner of Rison at Barton could leapfrog the Pirates since both teams have a win advantage over the Pirates.

The best case scenario would be for McGehee to defeat Fordyce and the Pirates to come out on top of Dumas to put the standings at McGehee, Fordyce, Drew Central, Dumas, with the winner of Palestine-Lake Village and Barton Rison competing for the final spot.

Playoff seating will be finalized after Friday’s games have completed.

The Pirates travel to Dumas to face the Bobcats on Thursday with a 7 pm kickoff.
