The Drew Central Pirates football season came to an end on Friday night after a home loss to the Dumas Bobcats.
Having to defeat the Bobcats to have an outside shot at the 3A State Football Championship Tournament after falling on the road to Palestine-Wheatley, 28-8, a week ago.
Dumas would receive the ball to start the contest and would begin their drive at their own 38 after the kickoff.
Dumas would move the ball down to the Pirate eight after a pass interference penalty and on the next play would cover the eight yards on a Rashad Moore run for the touchdown.
Noe Rameriz added the extra point to give Dumas the 7-0 lead.
The Pirates would get excellent field position after a 57 yard return by Tre’Bennett Fuller to set the Pirates up at the Dumas 18.
Kalani Collins would pick up five yards followed by an offside penalty by Dumas that put the Pirates at the eight.
A high snap with Drew Central recovering the ball moved them back to the 18.
Fuller’s next pass would fall incomplete with Fuller gaining four yard to the 14 on a run on the next play.
On the next play, Fuller would connect with Jaden Jones for a 14 yard touchdown pass and reception.
Hunter Griffin added the extra point to tie the game, 7-7, with 6:39 remaining in the quarter.
The Pirates would force the Bobcats to turn the ball over on downs on their next possession with the Pirates drive extending into the second quarter.
The Pirates would move the ball down to the Dumas 17 yard line where they would attempt a field goal that was not successful giving the Bobcats possession with 7:28 remaining in the half.
The Pirate defense would force the Bobcats into punting formation on the drive from their own 20 yard line, but the pressure from the defense would get to the punter forcing him to run and be tackled by Chris Veazy at the Dumas five.
Collins would push the ball to the three, but on the next play, the Pirates were flagged for a holding call that brought the ball back to the Dumas 13.
A second holding call would place the ball at the 23 and after an incomplete pass, the Bobcats would force a turnover, recovering a fumble at the Dumas 48 on a recovery by Robert Alford.
Dumas would be forced to punt on their next possession, but the Pirates would fumble the return with Dumas’ Vincent Corry recovering the ball at Pirate 19.
With 53 seconds remaining in the half, the pirates would force Dumas to turn the ball over on downs and with 21 seconds on the clock, the Pirates would take a knee to end the half with the score tied at seven.
Dumas would get the next score in the contest with two seconds remaining in the third quarter after the Bobcats blocked a punt with the ball going out of bounds for a safety to give the Bobcats a 9-7 lead.
Dumas would add to their score total on the next possession after the safety.
After starting their possession on the Drew Central 39 yard line, the Bobcats would drive down to the Drew Central six where Darnail Walker connected with Marcus Kilgore for the bobcat touchdown.
Rameriz added the extra point to give the Bobcats a 16-7 lead with 9:52 remaining in the contest.
The Pirates would not be able to get any offense going on their next possession, being forced to punt with Dumas taking over at the 50.
After driving to the Drew Central 41, Dumas’ Moore would break free but the Pirates would knock the ball loose with Ladon Peacock recovering the fumble for the Pirates at the Drew Central 10.
The Pirates would start the drive with a delay of game penalty, but would drive the ball into Dumas territory, but with 1:55 remaining in the contest, Fuller’s pass would be intercepted by Kilgore at the Dumas 21, returning the ball to the Drew Central 20.
Dumas would run out the remaining time on the game clock to take the 16-7 win, securing the fourth seed from the 8-3A.
With the loss, the Pirates sixth in conference play with a 2-8 overall record and a 2-5 conference record.
The Pirates would finish ahead of the Barton Bears. who finished in seventh place, and the Lakeside Beavers, who was last in conference play.
Drew Central’s two wins this season came against Barton, who they defeated on homecoming night, and Lake Village.
